It's no fun to think about your own death, and life expectancy does vary by demographic group, but individuals should at least plan to live to 85 years of age for the purpose of retirement budgeting. Most people can maintain their pre-retirement standard of living on only 60 to 80 percent of their former earnings. So, it's a simple calculation then for how much will be needed annually. For those earning more than $50K per year, a target of 60 percent of their pre-retirment income is usually adequate. Those earning between $20K and $30K will probably continue spending as much as 80 percent of their work income in their retirement years. (read more)

How to sign up for Medicare

It is perfectly reasonable, however, to contemplate the death of both parents or some such similar situation in which no clear guardian for the minor child exists. When other attempts at amicable resolutions fail, small claims court can be an ideal venue for settling the disputes of individuals and small businesses. Each state regulates its own small claims system, but in all cases the sums that can be recovered are limited, usually to between $5,000 and $7,000 depending on the venue. This judgment cap makes small claims court good for pursuing unpaid rent or other debts, compensation for damage to property, or reimbursement for faulty goods. Civil complaints such as libel or slander cannot be brought in small claims court.

Anyone who's been convicted of DUI should consider themselves lucky if they haven't seriously injured or killed anyone. But then, eventually there will be the matter of insurance, which will become much more expensive after the DUI conviction. Probably the worst thing to do would be to drop an insurance policy, since it may be difficult to find anything else cheaper and insurance will only get more expensive with any significant lapse in coverage. And, further exacerbating the situation, should insurance coverage lapse, in some cases a DUI convicted driver might be required by their state to file a proof of insurance SR22 form.

The ABCs of living trusts

A trust is a legal arrangement whereby one person or group manages property for another. Real estate, cash or any other asset is entrusted by the grantor, who creates the trust. Most often, but not always, the beneficiary of the trust is a person other than the grantor. A living trust is a way to pass assets along to children or other beneficiaries while avoiding the costs and time necessary to move a Last Will and Testament through probate court.

How to get a felony expunged in California

The process of having a felony "expunged" is actually called "dismissal" is the court system. In essence it means that a plea or finding of guilt is retro-actively overlooked and the case is dismissed. It's important to understand that a dismissal only relates to a conviction - the arrest will remain on the criminal record. If there was no conviction, or to remove an arrest from the record, a Petition for Factual Innocence must be filed, which is a separate and much more difficult process from getting a felony expunged. Therefore, before dismissal can occur, an individual should be absolutely certain about what appears on their criminal record.
